An Epidemiological Survey of Major Mental Disorders in a Korean Rural Area, Paing-Seong Eub

Abstract
|
|
|
The epidemiological survey of schizophrenia, manic depressive illness, alcoholic dependent syndrome, senile psychosis, mental retardation and neurotic disorder by the census visit method at Paing-Seong Eub, Pyeong-Taig Kun, Kyung-Gi Do, in August, 1980 has resulted in the following findings;
1. The prevalence rates for schizophrenia, manic depressive illness, alcoholic dependent syndrome, senile psychosis, mental retardation and neurotic disorder were 3.1, 2.3, 28.0, 3.1, 4.7 and 34.3, respectively. The age-adjusted prevalence rates for above-mentioned ilnesses were 5.4, 4.1, 48.6, 31.7, 10.9, 59.5, respectively.
2. The male-to-female ratio was 34 :2 in alcoholic dependent syndrome and 16 : 28 in neurotic disorder.
3. Farmer (35. 1%) in male and housewife (24.7%) in female were the most common occupations of the cases and the next common occupations were unemployed (13.016) , laborer (10.3%) and student (7.2%) .
4. In the educational status of the cases excluding mental retardation, below the elementary school level was most common (76.3%).
5. In the social status of the cases, the lower third class was most frequent (50.016).
